ABOUT THE PROJECT
We ran a 6 week programme with The British Red Cross in Hackney, teaching a group of Asylum seekers basic sewing and mending skills. Every week, the group would spend 1.5 hours working on a chosen sewing project.
Throughout this project we introduced the essentials of sewing, using a sewing machine and mending methods.
OUTCOME
A group of 6 participants attended the workshop on a weekly basis. Each person had a unique project. Participants learned the basics of using a sewing machine, pattern cutting and mending methods. Each participant started the course with little or no experience sewing and by week 4 had an understanding of a sewing machine, mending method, using patterns, adjusting patterns and sewing. The first cohort was cut short due to the 2020 pandemic. However at the end of 2020, a 10 week sewing programme took place at the British Red Cross building in Hackney. Participants learned how to make a garment.
