ABOUT THE PROJECT
We ran a 6 week programme with The British Red Cross in Hackney, teaching a group of refugees basic sewing and mending skills. Every week, the group would spend 1.5 hours working on a chosen sewing project.
Through this project we introduced the essentials of sewing, using a sewing machine and mending methods. Each participant worked on their own items of clothing.
A group of 6 participants attended the workshop on a weekly basis. Each person had a unique project. Participants learned the basics of using a sewing machine, pattern cutting and mending methods. Each participant began without knowing how to use a machine, and by week 4 had an understanding of a sewing machine, mending methods.
